Not Good Enough

Last week’s work experience was a good example of what the Sabbath means to me.

Spring runoff hasn’t yet filled the creek that serves as our water source. After all the planning, effort, and surprise face-washes that were put towards supplying the fields with water, most of the fields here were still dry by the end of Friday.

I woke up on Saturday morning to a different world outside. The air was sweet with fragrance, as if the blossoming trees were expressing their thankfulness for the refreshing showers that had fallen during the night. And every field was perfectly irrigated.

Our best efforts often give insufficient results. This is especially true in our spiritual lives. God gives us the strength to work with Him as far as we can, but then He asks us to simply rest, trusting Him to finish the work that we could never accomplish.

For more on this topic, I recommend Hebrews 4.
